Since graduating from the University of Southern Maine, Joy has studied portraiture at the Portland School of Art, Beaux-Arts in Paris, and the Richard Lack Atelier in Minneapolis. She has also worked as a graphic designer, freelance illustrator, and drawing instructor.
Soon after moving to San Diego, Joy discovered the beauty and history of Southern California. This has become the inspiration for her children's books.
In 2014, Joy completed a Masters of Art Education from Boston University. Her thesis is titled "Art Education for the Blind and Visually Impaired."
